Habitats of the World Mural
Yu Neng Primary School,
(ground floor corridor, 45m x 4.2m)
Done by P5 students of 2005 and 2006

This intedisciplinary ceramic art and science learning project is a 2 year long project, involving all P5 students of 2005 and 2006. Students learn about the flora and fauna found in the 9 habitats around the world. Students learn how to do study sketches, and create study notes on structure and movement. Upon their return, they embarked on 16 hours of drawing, painting and clay modelling. The best works are mounted on walls as part of an educational mural for all to admire and learn from.

The mural starts with a relief tile mural of the world map. The viewer learn about where the 9 habitats of the world are situated in the world.

Above, each habitat is divided equally on the 45m wall. The above greenish walls represent the life found in rivers habitat. Note the scale of prominent creatures that can measure 1.5m in length!

Freshwater fishes found in the Amazon River (Rivers Habitat). Students learnt about the native animals found in the Amazon River, particularly the guppy and tetra. We also see a 2 feet long pirahna with it’s robust body protruding from the wall. Instructors demonstrate the technique on how to cut the shape in clay, how to shape and create the details. The best works are mounted based on actual social behavioural patterns in the wild.

POLAR REGION
Arctic Terns. These birds are semi spherical in form, and students enjoy touching the feathers and looking at the glazes on the birds’ body.

MOUNTAINS
The mountains habitat is depicted with the creation of a rocky terrain and a mountain goat overlooking the valleys from a cliff. Students often start-off in their ceramic endeavour with the observation and making of simple things such as pebbles and rocks. (see above slate rocks). Talented students embark on more ambitous subjects such as the large 1.5m mountain goat.

CORAL REEFS
This is an authoritative work on life found on the coral reefs. Students had a blast learning about the fascinating aquatic life and odd fish behaviours of reef creatures. In the artroom, they shaped starfishes, clams, and various species of fishes prolific on Asian reefs. Can you identify the different feeding habits of the damselfishes and fairy basslets.

Hawksbill Turtle: commonly found in asian waters. Note the line textures on the shell and the jagged edges around back of the shell.

Image
Schooling squids: Squids swim backwards. Note the unique tectacles movement created by each individual 10 year-old artist!

Can you tell the difference between a squid and a cuttlefish? Children can see the differences on the mural wall.
